Distinguished Research Associates

Prof. James Tollefson, University of Washington is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong. He has also held visiting posts in Japan, the Philippines, China, and Slovenia.  His research interests include language policy, sociolinguistics, language and inequality, second language education, and language and ideology.  His most recent books are Language Policies in Education: Critical Issues (2^nd edition); Power and Inequality in Language Education; Planning Language, Planning Inequality; and (with Amy B.M. Tsui) Medium of Instruction Policies: Which Agenda? Whose Agenda? and Language Policy, Culture and Identity in Asian Contexts. His current research critically examines mass media coverage of language policy issues, language and nationalism, and research methods in language planning.

Prof. Marilyn Martin-Jones is an Emeritus Professor based at the MOSAIC Centre for Research on Multilingualism, University of Birmingham. She was the founding Director of the MOSAIC Centre (2007—2010). Over the last 35 years, she has been involved in critical ethnographic research on multilingualism and literacy in classroom and community contexts in the UK. She has a particular interest in the ways in which language and literacy practices contribute to the construction of identities, in local life worlds and in educational settings, and with  the ways in which such practices are bound up with local and global relations of power. She is currently editor (with Joan Pujolar) of the Routledge book series: Critical Studies in Multilingualism.

Professor Jay Lemke is Senior Research Scientist in the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition and adjunct Professor of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. Before coming to San Diego, he was Professor in the School of Education at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Ph.D. programs in Literacy Language and Culture, Science Education, and Learning Technologies. He was formerly Professor and Executive Officer of the Ph.D. Program in Urban Education at the City University of New York, where he is Professor Emeritus. He is the author of Textual Politics: Discourse and Social Dynamics; and Talking Science: Language, Learning, and Values, and over 100 other scholarly publications in discourse linguistics, multimedia semiotics, and science and literacy education. He has been co-Editor of the journals Linguistics and Education and Critical Discourse Studies.His current research focus is on the integration of feeling and meaning in multimedia activity systems.

Professor Ben Rampton is Professor of Applied & Sociolinguistics and Director of the Centre for Language Discourse and Communication at King’s College London (www.kcl.ac.uk/ldc).  He does interactional sociolinguistics, and his interests cover urban multilingualism, ethnicity, class, youth and education.  He is the author of Crossing: Language & Ethnicity among Adolescents (Longman 1995/St Jerome 2005) and Language in Late Modernity: Interaction in an Urban School (CUP 2006), and a co-author of Researching Language: Issues of Power and Method (Routledge 1992).  He co-edited ‘The Language, Ethnicity & Race Reader (Routledge 2003) and Language & Superdiversity (Routledge 2015), and he edits Working Papers in Urban Language and Literacies.  He was founding convener of the UK Linguistic Ethnography Forum, and was the Director of the King’s ESRC Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Centre from 2011-2014 (www.kcl.ac.uk/kissdtc).

Professor Ofelia García is Professor in the Ph.D. programs of Urban Education and of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She has been Professor of Bilingual Education at Columbia University´s Teachers College, Dean of the School of Education at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University, and Professor of Education at The City College of New York. García has published widely in the areas of bilingualism, bilingual education, sociology of language, and language policy. She is the Associate General Editor of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language and the co-editor of Language Policy (with H. Kelly-Holmes). Among her best-known books are Bilingual Education in the 21st Century: A Global Perspective; and Translanguaging; Language, Bilingualism and Education (with Li Wei), which received the 2015 British Association of Applied Linguistics Award.

Professor Beverly Dewerianka is a Professorial Fellow in the School of Education at the University of Wollongong, Australia, where until recently she led a key research centre funded by several national grants. Her research in the field of language and literacy education has been influential in the development of curriculum policy both in Australia and internationally.  Her best known teacher publications are Exploring How Texts Work and A Grammar Companion for Primary Teachers, both published by the Primary English Teachers Association of Australia. Her literacy publications include professional works that have been best sellers for several years and have prompted invitations to present plenary addresses in countries as diverse as the USA, China, UK, Sweden, Indonesia, Denmark, Netherlands, Uruguay, South Korea as well as Hong Kong, where she has acted as External Examiner at both HKIED and HKU. Her contribution to the field has been recognized by awards from the key literacy professional associations in Australia.

Professor Terrence G. Wiley is President of the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, and he serves as Special Professor, Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership and Graduate School, University of Maryland, College Park, MD. He is also Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, where he served as Executive Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education and Director of the Division of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies. He has also held a number of visiting professorships, most recently at Renmin University of China. He has won numerous awards for scholarship, teaching, and service, including the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) Distinguished Scholarship and Service Award (2014).

Professor Wen Qiu Fang is Professor of Applied Linguistics in Beijing Foreign Studies University, as well as Chair of University Academic Committee and Director of BFSU Academy of Language Sciences. She is also President of China English Language Education Association, and editor of Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics (in English) and of Foreign Language Education in China (in Chinese). She has obtained three national and four provincial awards for excellence in teaching. She is also an experienced researcher and writer, having published more than 140 papers and 17 books, and has finished/is conducting more than 30 research projects. Her research interests include second language teaching and learning, teacher professional development and national language capacity.

Professor Gopinathan Saravanan is currently Senior Advisor at The HEAD Foundation, a Singapore-based think tank devoted to research and policy influence in education and leadership in Asia. He was formerly Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. He also served as the Dean of the School of Education (Mar 1994 till June 2000). In 2003, he helped NIE establish a Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice. He obtained his doctorate in comparative higher education and education policy at SUNY, Buffalo, United States. He is founding editor of the Singapore Journal of Education, serves on the International Advisory Board of the Asia Pacific Journal of Education, and co-edits the Routledge Critical Studies in Asian Education. He consulted widely on education policy development with the World Bank, UNESCO, UNICEF, among others. Prof. Gopinathan is acknowledged internationally as an expert on Singapore’s educational development. He has written extensively on language policy development and practice in Singapore. Language, Capital and Culture : Critical Studies of Language and Education in Singapore (co-edited with V. Vaish and Y. Liu) was published in 2007. His most recent publications include Education and the Nation State (Routledge, 2012), Globalisation and the Singapore Curriculum (2013) and Education (2015:STP), launched in honour of Singapore’s 50th year of Independence.

Professor Li Wei is Chair of Applied Linguistics and Director of the UCL Centre of Applied Linguistics at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London, UK. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS), UK. He is Principal Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism (SSCI, Sage) and Applied Linguistics Review (SSCI, De Gruyter), co-editor of Global Chinese (De Gruyter) and Chinese Language and Discourse (Benjamins), and series editor of ‘Guides to Research Methods in Language and Linguistics’ for Wiley-Blackwell. His research interests cover a wide range of topics within the field of bilingualism and multilingualism. Amongst his recent publications are Translanguaging: Language, Bilingualism and Education (with Ofelia Garcia, 2014, Palgrave Macmillan), which won the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) 2015 Book Prize, Applied Linguistics (2014, Wiley-Blackwell), Multilingualism in the Chinese Diaspora Worldwide (2016, Routledge), and The Cambridge Handbook of Linguistic Multi-Competence (with Vivian Cook, 2016, CUP).

Professor Ingrid Piller is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Over the course of her international career, she has also held appointments at universities in Germany, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and USA. Ingrid’s research expertise is in Intercultural Communication, the Sociolinguistics of Language Learning and Multilingualism, and Bilingual Education. She is particularly interested in the ways in which linguistic diversity as it arises in the contexts of globalization and migration intersects with social inclusion and global justice. Her most recent book Linguistic Diversity and Social Justice will be published by Oxford University Press in 2016. She is also the author of Intercultural Communication: A critical introduction (Edinburgh University Press, 2011) and Bilingual Couples Talk: The discursive construction of hybridity (Benjamins, 2002). Ingrid serves as editor-in-chief of the international sociolinguistics journal Multilingua and the sociolinguistics portal Language on the Move, where most of her publications are available for open access download.

Professor Monica Heller is Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto. She is past president (2013-2015) of the American Anthropological Association, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada. Her work on language policy takes a critical look at multilingualism, francophone Canada, and nationalism, post-nationalism and linguistic minority movements more generally. Her relevant publications include work on education (2006/1999 Linguistic Minorities and Modernity), ideologies of bilingualism (2007, ed. Bilingualism: A Social Approach), and language, nation and the transformations of capitalism (2011, ed. with A. Duchêne, Language in Late Capitalism: Pride and profit; 2011 Paths to Postnationalism: A Critical Ethnography of Language and Identity; 2015, with L. Bell, M. Daveluy, M. McLaughlin and H. Noël, Sustaining the Nation: the Making and Moving of Language and Nation).
