Teaching with Artificial Intelligence in Humanly Intelligent Ways (April 9, 2026)
Abstract
This presentation will begin by reviewing important changes in texts and literacy over the past few decades, consider a few existential questions for teachers in the era of AI, discuss some of AI’s limitations and risks, and lay out some ideas for working creatively with AI in ways that further learners’ literacy as well as language abilities.

About the Speaker
Rick Kern is Professor of French at the University of California at Berkeley. He teaches courses in French linguistics, language, and foreign language pedagogy, and supervises graduate teaching assistants. His research interests include language acquisition, literacy, and relationships between language and technology. Recent publications include “Twenty-first century technologies and language education: Charting a path forward” (Modern Language Journal), “Literacies for Teachers” (The Cambridge Handbook of Technology in Language Teaching and Learning), and “Where, When, and How French is Learned” (The Oxford Handbook of the French Language).
